“Glory to God in the highest,
Luke 2:14 (NKJV)
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
At this time of year I like to re-read the account of Christ’s birth found in the Gospel of Luke. When I read those words proclaimed by the Heavenly Host, I can’t help but feel a wistful yearning for the promise of peace on earth.
Peace is an increasingly rare commodity in our world and one that is high on many a wish list this Christmas.
Although getting used to shortages and delivery delays, many of us continue to hold out hope that the gift of Peace will arrive just when it is so badly needed.
But how are we to find peace in the midst of the chaos all around us?
Our Lord left His followers with this promise:
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.
John 14:27 (NET)
We are not to look to our circumstances (the world) for our peace, but are instead to calm our hearts and take courage from the promises in God’s Word.
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, but take courage—I have conquered the world.”
John 16:33 (NET)
Read the Word, meditate upon it, and pray to receive God’s peace in your heart.
And then do your part to bring about peace on earth by treating everyone you meet with Good Will, at Christmastime and always.
