In 1949, when George Orwell published his dystopian fantasy novel, 1984, about a society where every norm was turned on its head and the very meaning of language was corrupted, no one believed it could possibly be a prophetic work. Yet today we live in a culture where our social foundations are being swept out from under our feet.
Nearly every day I hear someone expressing shock and confusion at the rapidly shifting values being touted.
“Has everyone gone crazy?” is a common lament.
While I continue to trust that God is in control, I need to spend more time in His Word and in prayer to fight my feelings of insecurity.
Two of the Scripture verses I cling to are below:
He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
Psalm 62:2
… a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell–and great was its destruction.”
Luke 6:47-49
When the world no longer makes sense, and I feel the sand shifting beneath my feet, I must cling to the Solid Rock, the Firm Foundation of my faith.
