Every writer soon learns how important it is to know exactly who you are writing for. The audience for my own cozy mystery novels (writing as J.B. Hawker) is predominantly women over forty who like wholesome, entertaining stories about down-to-earth characters. My readers enjoy thrills and mystery, some gentle humor, and touches of sweet romance where good always triumphs at the end.
If I were to try to build my audience by including steamy sex scenes or graphic violence with twisted anti-heroes, my audience would be offended, confused and disappointed.
The audience for this blog is predominantly Christians who, like me, are trying to grow stronger in our faith walk. Although we aren’t all writing for publication, each of us has an audience for our daily life.
We believers are instructed to let our light shine among men. The people we encounter every day are one audience we should always be aware of …
…15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matt. 5:16
… but, we need to be even more aware that our main, most important audience, The One we need to please everyday, is Our Lord.
I pray that my thoughts and actions will never offend or disappoint my Audience.
