Signs of the Times

bibleIn the book of Matthew, Jesus rebukes the Sadducees and Pharisees, those politicians and cultural leaders of their age, for being able to interpret signs of the material world around them, but not being able to discern the signs of the times. (Matt. 16:1-4)

In our present day, many of our leaders and people of influence in the Christian community are guilty of this same flaw. They are looking to powerful men to bring restoration to our country using worldly, material signs and ignoring the spiritual character of these men.

When leaders of the evangelical community cast their support behind a man such as Donald Trump in the presidential campaign, they are ignoring his character in favor of what they hope he will do with his money and power. He claims today to be a follower of Christ, however, we are each one known by our fruits, not by our proclamations.

The Bible tells us God is in control and no man rules a nation without God allowing it. However, we know He has allowed weak, sinful and even evil men to rule from time to time throughout history for His own purposes; often to chastise His rebellious people.

There is an adage which says people get the leader they deserve. I pray daily that God will have mercy upon us as a nation and bring a godly man into the White House, rather than the leader we may deserve for our rebellion and indifference.

True. Our religious/moral/cultural shift has been especially striking as I work through Jeremiah, Lamentations and Ezekiel. God sees it all. And is very grieved.

I’m with you on Trump, but what do you mean by restoration?

    • I suppose I mean moving our cultural ethics back a bit closer to Judeo-Christian values and away from the upside down, newspeak country we’ve become. We’ve never been a perfect nation, of course, and any country with more than a dozen people will never have 100% unity of thought as to what we should be, but we were once a nation that stood for freedom both here and abroad.
