With Thanksgiving approaching, I’ve been thinking again about my many blessings.
Walking beside the river today I came up with something new to be thankful for. My daily walk serves two purposes; physical fitness and spiritual health. I spend time in prayer and reflection as I stride along, marching to my inner soundtrack, the background music of my life.
Today’s theme music was an old favorite hymn. I began to pay attention to the words playing in my head and thought how blessed I am to have spent my life surrounded by sacred music. The words and music have become embedded in my subconscious and come bubbling to the surface, completely unbidden, whenever I let my mind rest.
Each morning I awake with some song playing on my internal music machine. This morning it was Puttin’ on the Ritz, but at least 75% of the time I begin my day with a hymn running through my mind.
The Bible tells us to take care of what enters our body through the mouth, the eyes or the ears, as these things become a part of who we are. We are to think about the lovely things (Phil 4:8) and sacred music is among the most lovely of God’s gifts.
How thankful I am for God’s gift of music.
