California, where I live, is at what I hope is the end of a multi-year drought. Once-flowing streams have been dry for so long their beds have become jungles of self-seeded trees, weeds, shrubs, and trash.
We had some blessed rain this week and while walking near one of these clogged creek beds I was picturing the flood we would have from a really hard rainfall. If the creek were in spate, the waters would surely overflow and cause damage. Hopefully, the local government will see to these overgrown waterways before a real rainy season hits.
I can see a parallel to our times of spiritual drought.
When our prayer life and Bible study dry up and we move away from God, filling our lives with worldly weeds and trivialities, there is no room left for a surge of living water. In such a congested state, we are no longer conduits of Spiritual blessings. Since we are in no condition to absorb what God has to offer, His blessings may not be felt in our own lives, either.
If I want to become a channel of blessings, I need to keep the way clear with a constant flow of prayer and Scripture.
A natural drought is bad, but a spiritual drought is so much worse.
Terrific analogy! Also, with our spiritual riverbeds like that, I’m thinking floods can happen and cause destruction to those around us.
