I recently saw an ad spot for reruns of the TV show, Monk. Tony Shaloub did such a perfect job of creating the title character on screen it may have actually hurt his career since the show went off the air, because people always think of him as Monk.
This same phenomenon has occurred to many actors. Christopher Reeve’s acting career was tragically cut short by an accident before being able to shake his Superman image.
I was thinking about typecasting in general and wondering just what sort of character I might become permanently identified with if I were an actor.
Actor Jim Caviezel gave a powerful portrayal of Jesus in the 2004 movie The Passion of the Christ. He has since gone on to play many roles, but whenever I see him act, I can’t erase the images of Christ.
I can only imagine how incredible it would be, if whenever anyone looked at my life, my past performances caused them to always see Jesus.
